I am so much my mothers daughter it isn't even funny. My mom is a very compassionate person. She has always instilled a value in us kids to take mercy on animals in need, to be compassionate people. Growing up, my mom was usually helping some sort of animal whether it be domesticated or wild, from bringing in litters of stray pups to bottle feeding orphaned rabbits. We learned many values from our up bringing. A few of those values, being compassion respect and a responsibility towards an animal by feeding it, finding it a home or by returning it back to the wild. I suppose I am just carrying on her tradition.... a tradition of compassion that I hope to instill in my children as well.
This little babe along with another, was found on the patio. The other one didn't make it. This one has two puncture wounds at the base of each wing... compliments of Apple Sauce (the cat) I am sure.
There was not a sign of the nest near by as we searched each tree and shrub around the house nor was there any frantic parents flying around. All we can do now is keep it on a heating pad, doctor the wounds and try to find it food. The first two items are easy but not knowing what kind of bird this is complicates the food process a bit.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Right now we are mashing worms and potato bug larva. Any suggestions/insight would be greatly appreciated.
Yikes. I wish I had better advice but the only thing I can think of is to try and find a wildlife rehabilition center. I had to locate one years ago when some well meaning person brought me a baby merganser they had "found" by a pond. They assumed that since I had domestic ducks I could raise the merganser. I couldn`t of course and I called our game commission to find someone who could.

If it has puncture wounds from a cat, chances are really, really slim that it will make it. The bacteria in a cat's mouth is almost always deadly. I've learned this the hard way over the years of my children rescuing and trying to save birds. Not trying to be a negative person, or unhelpful. I just don't want you to feel bad, or responsible, if it doesn't make it.

I use to transport for two wildlife rehab centers but the one closest to us closed down and the other is a few hours away. I did get some helpful information on the net... after I saw their recommendations I was able to recall what the local rehabber use to do. (moisten cat food and meal worms). I am hoping to keep this lil guy alive until we can make the journey to the rehabbers south of here.
I cant wait to go back there. Their facility is absolutely amazing... and I know this little guy will get the very best care.

ReplyDeleteI understand completely. Cats have very dirty mouths... and claws for that matter. I doctored the wounds with triple antibiotic but I read that topical antibiotic rarely works. I am just going to do what I can and if it doesnt work I did my best. I am waiting now for the Rehabbers to call me back. My girlfriend that had a fledgling last year said they refused to take it because of the type of bird... I hope that isnt the case here....because this little one eats every 45 min from dawn to dusk.
Hope the little bird makes it. I do remember that cat food was recommended.
